WHAT ARE THE EXACT EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS OF YOUR ICAN UNITS?

iCan’s exterior container measurements are: 20′ unit-231″L x 93″W x 96″H and 16′ unit-192″L x 93″W x 96″H. With our flexible truck options, we don’t need a whole lot of room beyond that, but if you’ve got a really tight spot and are unsure, let’s talk and we can look at satellite views together and figure out the best solution for you

CAN I KEEP IT IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME?

You can rent an iCan for as long or as short as you want, but we definitely recommend you check with your city, village or town to see if they have any regulations on it. A quick Google search or a call to your condo association should give you the answer.

CAN I KEEP IT IN THE STREET?

Most municipalities frown on that, so no. BUT on a rare occasion, like with a fire or flood emergency, the town might say yes. If that’s the case, they’ll likely give you a permit, and we will need a copy of it to prove it’s OK when we get that inevitable call from the authorities.

CAN I PUT IT IN MY YARD?

A definite maybe. Each case is different and our drivers will work with you to determine if the placement is feasible. Grass will not grow under an iCan (and let’s make sure we don’t put it on top of an underground sprinkler head) but grass is as tough as an iCan and usually comes back in time.

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO SCHEDULE ME?

Usually only about 2-3 days, a little more during the warmer months like 3-4 days. But if you’re ready for pickup, and about to renew, and we can’t get you for another day or two, don’t worry; we’re human. We won’t renew you when we know we’re fetching it in a day or so and the delay is on us.

IS MY STUFF SAFE? WHAT ABOUT WEATHER?

The whole point of a container is to store stuff outside of your house, so they’re DESIGNED to keep your stuff safe outdoors. To date, we’ve not had any issue with weather, neither heat nor snow nor rain. That’s why our containers are constructed of solid steel, including the roof (translucent plastic POD® roofs that admit light sound great, until your upholstery fades from the sun.) The doors are weather-stripped, strong, and have a spot for your padlock – and you’re the only one with the key. If you want to keep it in our storage facility, that’s safe too, with our locked entries, automatic sprinkler system, security system, and video surveillance. Our indoor storage provides the optimal climate conditions for your belongings, between 55 and 80 degrees with low humidity. Think of it this way: it’s like leaving stuff in your car, and we all do that without a problem. You’re still the only one with the key.

MY DRIVEWAY SLOPES. CAN YOU DELIVER?

Most likely. We haven’t met a driveway yet that we couldn’t handle. That’s why we have different delivery systems and we plan for success. While the unit will follow the grade of the driveway, we’ll use shims to stabilize it so it won’t bounce around while you’re using it.

Packing

WHAT CAN I PUT IN AN ICAN?

Better question: what CAN’T you put in an iCan? As nice as it is, you can’t live in an iCan, and you really wouldn’t want to use it for your priceless Picasso. And items such as combustibles (propane/fuel tanks, paint and etc) or perishables (food items) create a potentially dangerous or harmful situation so we can’t allow those in an iCan either. If we had a nickel for every customer who asked if they could use it as a man cave or a she shed…uh, no. Just, don’t. Please.

HOW DO I PACK AN iCAN?

Check out our packing tips and watch this cool video – these guys are good. iCan has vertical metal struts for the most flexibility in attaching your tie-downs and securing your stuff. Pack so things support each other as you go along and use those tie-downs. And if you’re not sure about your Tetris skills, we offer insurance on your contents.

DO YOU PROVIDE LOADING AND UNLOADING SERVICES?

No, the iCan guys do all their lifting with hydraulics. But we can give you the names of a few local companies that provide labor and have successfully serviced our customers. Pricing is between you and them, though; iCan is not part of that transaction.

HOW MUCH FITS IN AN iCAN?

A 16’ iCan generally fits 3-4 rooms, or the contents of a one-bedroom apartment (ask how many moves we’ve done for our kids, so we know this first-hand). We don’t move the 20s, they tend to get overloaded and would cause a hazard either to our delivery systems or break the DOT weight rules, so those are just used for on-site storage. Feel free to stuff that baby to the roof.

IS THERE A WEIGHT LIMIT ON AN iCAN?

If you’re moving – definitely. You can pack 7000 pounds of stuff in a 16’ iCan. We have a scale on our machine and typically, when people move a typical blend of household items, it doesn’t reach the red line. BUT if you’re packing nothing but boxes of paper or books, or boxes of tools or construction equipment, you’ll get there faster so be aware, you might have to leave some empty space at the top and not stuff it like a turkey. The weight limit comes from the DOT requirements on the road, which is why we don’t move our 20s; they get overloaded quickly.

Security

HOW DO I LOCK MY iCAN?

You provide your own locks – remember, you need TWO, we have double doors on BOTH ends. That way you’re the only one with the key. A standard size padlock is fine; if you want super security, check out the Master Magnum disc lock – no one’s clipping that one. If you don’t have a set on-hand, just ask us. Our drivers keep a few sets in the truck that we can sell you on the spot.

ARE MY CONTENTS INSURED?

You’re responsible for the stuff you pack in your iCan, but it may well be covered by the homeowners’ or renters’ insurance you already have so check with your broker or policy. We offer contents insurance as well, just in case you’re a belt-and-suspenders person. Just ask!

I MISS MY STUFF, CAN I VISIT?

The whole point of a container is to store stuff outside of your house, so they’re DESIGNED to keep your stuff safe outdoors. To date, we’ve not had any issue with weather, neither heat nor snow nor rain. That’s why our containers are constructed of solid steel, including the roof (translucent plastic POD® roofs that admit light sound great, until your upholstery fades from the sun.) The doors are weather-stripped, strong, and have a spot for your padlock – and you’re the only one with the key. Payment

HOW DOES THE MONTHLY RENT WORK?

The rent is based on your anniversary (delivery) date, and we don’t pro-rate. But if you’re done and want it gone, we’d be happy to pick it up before it renews. We charge the first month’s rent and the delivery fee (plus tax) the day before we deliver, and keep your card on file in order to renew it on the anniversary date each month. We charge each part of a move as it is incurred, and the pickup fee comes at the end of the entire rental when you’re all done with your iCan and saying goodbye.

I WAS NOTIFIED MY CREDIT CARD FAILED. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

You can either call us with your new credit card info or you can click this link https://www.icanstorage.com/cc-update/  and you will be taken to a secure form where you can update your billing information.

Moving

HOW DO I MOVE AN iCAN?

You don’t – we do. In fact, please definitely DON’T try to move it, that would violate our lease. iCan uses the patented Horizontal Lift System to set the container gently in place. The Horizontal Lift is a hydraulic mechanism that lifts a fully-loaded iCan and, without tilting or rolling it, loads it onto our truck. This minimizes the shifting of your contents – but you still have to pack it properly, using tie-downs and furniture protectors. We also use the iBot System, a power unit and wheels that turn your iCan into a vehicle to maneuver into small spaces. Then our excellent drivers transport your iCan either to our facility or to your next location.

I MISS MY STUFF, CAN I VISIT?

Hmmmm, not really. Once your unit is tucked away, it might be buried behind a wall of units, or high on a stack, and behind gates, fences, cameras, alarms, etc. – it’s like visiting a prison. So choose your stored items wisely. That said, if your home renovation went long and now you absolutely, positively NEED your Christmas decorations, call us. We’ll figure something out. After all, we like decorations too.

IS THERE A DELIVERY FEE IF YOU BRING THE CONTAINER TO MY HOME?

Yes, a transportation fee applies whenever we move your unit, whether it’s from your home to our facility, or from one part of your property to another.

HOW LONG CAN I TAKE TO LOAD OR UNLOAD MY CONTAINERS?

As much time as you like. The container is rented month-to-month. The only difference is, if you choose our “live unload” option, we ask that you empty the container within two hours while our driver waits. What’s a “live unload?” That’s a different FAQ – read on!

DO YOU OFFER LONG DISTANCE MOVES?

Sorry – we don’t. We are a locally based company and hey, why would you want to leave the northeast anyway? I mean, we have snow, we have cold, we have rain…wait a minute…

WHAT’S THIS “LIVE UNLOAD” ALL ABOUT?

Ah, we finally get to the “live unload” thing. If you’re planning to move a considerable distance away, you may notice your quote contains a “live unload” option that will save you money. This means that rather than iCan dropping your container off at your new home and returning for it days, weeks or months later, you can save money by unloading it while the driver waits, within two hours. It saves you money because it saves us time. This option is not available (or even desirable) for every move. We only offer it if it will give you a significant savings. At iCan, we’re looking out for you!
